Peasants, Princes and Pestilence
 Lock your doors and pull up the drawbridge: the dreaded ‘Great Pestilence’ is here. At the start of this half term, we’ll meet a strange character and use a range of source materials to research the symptoms of the Black Death. Our geography skills will help us understand how the black death came to Britain and why it spread so quickly. We’ll investigate the effects of bacteria on the human body and find out about disgusting and dangerous plague ‘cures’. Our personal plague journals will record the horror of the black death and we’ll write poetry inspired by Geoffrey Chaucer. We’ll learn about the ‘dance of death’ and perform dances inspired by Saint-Saen’s Danse Macabre. We’ll learn about different social classes, understand the reasons for the Peasants’ Revolt, take part in a mock battle and learn what it was like to be a knight.

During this term, we will be concentrating on reading and the skills we need in order to answer a range of question type, in particular – meaning of vocabulary within the context of the text we are reading together with using our inference skills and using evidence from the text to justify our responses.  Our texts this half term will be based around narratives, with a focus on Grimm Tales by Philip Pullman.  We will be looking at the language and sentence structures and the effect that these have upon our readers.  We will be writing our own interpretation of our favourite wonder tale using a wide range of punctuation to aide cohesion. Homework for spelling and grammar will continue to be set each week.


In maths we students will work to consolidate their prior learning as SATS are quickly approaching.  We will also complete our unit of study on geometry, negative numbers and data. Students will still be assigned work from their homework books, which will be due in each Thursday.  As a reminder, Mrs Dyer will continue to have a homework club during lunch on Wednesdays for any year 6 student that would like extra help with their maths homework.  Students have also been given two small packets of revision ideas.  It would be helpful for students to read over these with you in preparation for their exams. We have been proud of the work the students have been doing as well as their positive attitudes towards maths.  Thank you for supporting them. 


This half term, students will continue designing fair tests and carrying them out- with a focus on using tools, recording data and making conclusions based on the results.  Students will also begin investigating electricity, which will be completed next half term.

 Religious Education

In this unit the children study the story of Easter from the perspective of Thomas. The work contained in this unit will require them to think about reasons why Thomas did not believe in the Resurrection of Christ at first and why people today believe that Jesus is risen from the dead. Children will also learn about Easter and the promise of eternal life. They will be introduced to some associations with Baptism and the celebration of a Christian funeral. We will also begin to research a range of Saints, to help us to prepare for our continuing journey in to the Sacrament of Confirmation.


PE is on Mondays for 6D and on Tuesdays for 6C with ‘Game On’ coaches.  Please ensure that children have the correct PE kit, including outdoor clothing, with them every day. These do not need to go home until the end of the half term.

 Other Points of Interest

As SATs is drawing near, it is extremely important that all students are present each day and on time.  This will provide them with the best opportunity to succeed.  Students have also had a visit by the school nurses and received information regarding how to stay relaxed as well as the importance of sleep.  We ask that children get a healthy night’s sleep, especially during the testing week.  We will also be holding breakfast club for all students from 8:00 am during the week of SATS, the 14th – 17th May.  It is highly encouraged that all children attend, even if they prefer to eat breakfast at home.
